When Steve and Nacy got married Steve handed out home made bear jerky to all his friends. the bear jerky was all the talk at the wedding because he had shot the bear himself. He was also having the bear stuffed, which of course thrills Nancy to no end to know that it will become decor in her new home. Not! Anyway, at some point during the evening’s festivities he ran out of the bear jerky. When Nancy’s grandmother, Sadie, asked if he had any for her, this was his answer. “Well, I gave it out to all my best buddies, and I wasn’t sure if you were one of my best buddies or not so I didn’t save any for you”.  She knew he was just joking around but I could just tell as she told me the story that it didn’t sit so well with her. She is a very spry 80 year old Amish woman but she is still 80 and a new son-in-law ought to have saved some bear jerky for her – best buddy or not. I am just saying. 

So there I was shopping for christmas gifts and I see this very soft, thick faux (but of course) fur blanket. I thought it would be perfect for Sadie to keep her warm. The coal stove in the kitchen heats her whole house but her bedroom is off in the back and  doesn’t get quite as warm. I wrapped up the “faux bear blanket” and I included a bag of Wilbur Buds which are the most delicious pieces of chocolate. They are made over in Litiz, Pennsylvania and you should try them some time.  I added a note to the gifts which basically said this. “Forget the bear jerky, I am giving you the whole bear and a bag of Wilburs because I already know you are one of my best buddies”. We had a good laugh about it when she read the note. I didnt realize just how funny she thought it was until I got her thank you card in the mail. She wrote, “The bear throw was warm and cozy on Sunday when it was so windy and cold outside. I wrapped it around myself on the buggy ride to church. And the Wilbur Buds, they just melted in my mouth. I would have shared them with Steve if he was one of my best buddies!”  I laughed out loud. She has a wonderful sense of humor and that is why she is one of my best buddies.
