Mulch Anyone?
Your first thought should be – why in the world is a pile of mulch the first photo I see under INSIDE THE HOUSE. Well, there is a good reason, there always is with me!
On the last day of October every year, I host a group of Amish teenagers for the day.
It is Sylvan’s oldest daughter, Nancy, and some members of her youth group. They spend the afternoon cleaning up my garden and putting down the mulch. In return, I host dinner for them and their families. In the past, I have ordered the food from Wegmans, Market or from my friend Chef John. However, this year, I decided to make it myself. The menu was lasagna, garlic bread, Caesar salad and a ton of desserts. I cooked all Friday night, by myself. Bob watched TV in the same room to keep me company. That is his version of helping.
When I woke up Saturday it was pouring, and it continued to pour the rest of the day. Nancy and her friends arrived by 2 pm and after we watched the rain for about ten minutes we all decided that there would be no mulching. We watched Men in Black instead. And so now you know why I still have that pile of mulch.
Of course, I am thinking that since I strayed from the Faux Farm way and actually cooked, Julia Childs made it rain. Just to teach me a lesson, you know, the way Ansel Adams gave me that shove last weekend. You aren’t starting to think that maybe, just perhaps, in that kind of, sorta, maybe way, that I am just a little weird about famous dead people trying communicate with me? I didn’t think so!
