Last Year’s Belated Christmas Card
I am always late for everything and just a little overwhelmed each holiday season.
Between home and work and kids, I failed to send out my Christmas cards last year. So after all the dust settled I thought up this poem and sent it out. And I also swore that I would do my cards early next Christmas. Well, here we are and my cards have not gone outon time again. Now I have to think up another silly poem to send out in the next few weeks. But here is last year’s excuse for my lateness.
OUR CHRISTMAS CARD POEM FROM 2007
T’was eight weeks past Christmas and all through the town
Not a wreath, nor a trimming could even be found.
All the trees had been stacked at the end of the street
The lights, balls and tinsel tucked away oh so neat.
The presents have been used or maybe returned
Only ashes remain of the yule logs that burned.
The kids with their i-pods and me with some bling
We all settled done and waited for spring.
When out at the mailbox there arose such a riot
I ‘d have moved a bit faster if only I’d started that diet.
I ran to the postman trembling with fear
I heard him cry out “A Christmas card at this time of year!”
The look on his face was a bit of a smirk
Clearly this card was the result of a quirk
Had the card gotten lost or perhaps just misplaced
To do it on purpose would be too big a disgrace.
Now Visa, now Target, Discover and Gap
On Am ex, on K-mart ,on Wal mart and Saks.
Oh the bills they are a piling to the top of the desk
Oh cash was the way to have avoided this mess.
As I opened the card that had lost it’s way
This lone lonely card – a straggler, a stray
I knew in a instant it’s message was clear
A card from a friend so precious and dear.
A note and good tidings sent from a friend.
Made the warmth of the holiday resurface again.
Tired of the shopping, and parking lot race
This belated little card brought a smile to my face
So as the cold winter weather settles into your house
And the sky of the noon day is as grey as a mouse
As the rush of the season has come to an end
I thought it would be nice to hear from a friend
I thought in my mind and said aloud to myself
I’ll send out my cards now – I’m late for everything else!
As you can see from the photo we are all still alive
Though at times we weren’t sure that Ali ‘d survive.
She’s nineteen and brilliant with dreams coming to fruition
We are thrilled she’s in college – couldn’t wait to pay the tuition.
Becca is now just looking for a college
If you ask her she tell you she has more then enough knowledge.
A new car to drive and a job at the mall
This kid better work cause she wants it all
The makeup, the tanning, the polish and nails
The purses, the i-pod, the i-phone and e-mails.
Jill is our baby though she is in junior high
She’s funny and smart, the apple of our eye.
The braces, the contacts, the cell phone and uggs
The singing, the dancing, the jokes and the hugs.
So to get back to the card that started the commotion
The card that gave me this post holiday notion
I called up the sender to say her card was received
I could only imagine the trials it had seen before getting to me
She started to laugh she hardly could speak
and said in a whisper “I only sent it last week”
At eighty years old she’s a jewel and a treasure
And what she said next I will remember forever.
The birthdays and holidays are dates to remember
But when staying in touch with your friends
“ALWAYS BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!”
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Valentines Day too!
