Quilts for Sale
This is a very typical Amish quilt, plain dark colors. Some Amish women sell their quilts from home. Others sell to stores and shops.
You can find quilts just about everywhere you go in Lancaster County. There is a wonderful Quilt Museum in the city of Lancaster. There is a smaller one in the village of Intercourse along with a few shops selling quilts and quilting fabrics. Zooks dry goods has a great selection of fabrics and it is conveniently located next to the pretzel place. I go to look at fabric – my first passion and then eat – my second passion. Aside from you BOB, in case you are reading this.
There is a great artilce called inthe ehow web site called:
How to Buy Quilting Fabrics in Lancaster County, PA
Is that bold enough for you? Don’t know how that happened, but I kind of like it. Check it out if you want an entire list of all the good fabric shops in Lancaster and get a nice tour of the land and a chance to meet the local people while you are at it.
Another fun way to buy quilts is at the Mud Auctions in the Spring. But you have to be hearty and patient. there aren’t called mud auctions for nothing. It is usually cold, wet and muddy. The Gordonville Auction, which is held the first Saturday of March auctions off over 600 quilts in one day. It is mind boggling. There is a preview the night before and it is well worth the visit so that you can see the quilts up close. A lot the local Amish women also sell there quilts via these auctions as they get some of the money and the rest goes to the fire company which the Amish enthusiastically support. Make sure you get a hand made quilt and not a machine made quilt – there is a difference!
Well that’s all for the quilts for now.
