Secret Exchange
When I had my first warehouse I would leave the office each day to pick up the kids after school. On our way home we had to drive under this little stone bridge near the train station. It had a traffic light at the end of it and we would always be stopped under the bridge. One day Ali looked out of the window and said “Hey, look on that ledge there is a gumby toy”. Sure enough there it was. I wonder who put that there and how long it has been there? The next day we were again stopped at the light under the bridge and Ali looked out but gumby was gone but, in his place was a pencil. Now that’s kind of weird! On the of the third day – you got it – no pencil but a dime was there. Ali, a child after my own heart said “money! and reached out and took it. I said “quick – you have to put something in it’s place” and she quickly pulled her hair scrunchie out of her hair and placed it on the rock ledge. Yes, she traded a $6.00 scrunchie for a dime so maybe she’s not my child after all. So it became a game we played, even if we didn’t have to drive that way – we did just to see what was there on the ledge. Everyday something else was there – a hair clip, penny, pebble, pack of matches. Now we clearly weren’t the only ones playing this game. Sometimes we would drive by but not be able to stop as we didn’t have the red light but we could see that a flower was there, but the next day the flower was gone and it it’s place was some other little trinket. We played the game on and off for over five years. We never saw anyone else and I don’t think anyone ever saw us. I also have to add that there is no sidewalk on the side of the wall with the ledge and in fact it is so close to the car that you can reach out of the passenger side and touch the stone ledge very easily . I say this because it can’t be a pedestrian that is doing this and it can’t be the driver of the car, due to the reach. So who does this?
I am only telling you this story because although I moved my warehouse almost 3 years ago I happened to go under the bridge today. I was stopped at the red light and I looked over and there on the ledge was a trinket. The game is still being played. I just thought this was a curious and interesting little story. There is no ending, I have no answer as to who does this nor how many people are involved, or why. It is just the way it is. Sometimes things are just that way.
