Detour
Due to construction along Route 81 North I discovered a little detour along route 11 N to avoid the 2 mile back up when the lanes have to converge to one lane for all of about 50 feet of construction. This happens about 4 times along a 10 miles stretch so one day I just got off at the next exit and headed north. It is interesting to see the small towns and farms along the way that you would ordinarily miss due to the generic highway scenery whizzing by at 80 miles an hour ( I mean 65 miles an hour). I also make secondary detours down side roads if it looks like a good barn or field. So here are a few photos from my last meandering along Route 11. This huge giant via duct structure just appears out of nowhere as you round a cornerin the little town of Nicholson, northeast Pennsylvania. The official name is the Tunkhannock Viaduct also known as the Nicholson Bridge.
“This reinforced concrete structure was the largest of its kind ever built when it went into service in 1915 on the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad. The bridge, 2,375 feet long and rising 240 feet above Tunkhannock Creek, was the focal point of a 39.6-mile relocation between Clarks Summit and Hallstead.”
And then you see the full expanse of it and it is really awesome!
So that was one really cool thing that I saw that I would have missed had I stayed in traffic. See, you learn something new when you veer off the beaten path. And it is good to have your camera at the ready cause you just never know when a via duct is gonna pop up in the middle of a field.
Happy Trails
